Neurocognitive Disorders include delirium, mild neurocognitive disorders, and major neurocognitive disorders. These disorders are disorder that primarily affect cognitive abilities including learning, memory, perception, and problem solving. Cognitive deficits may be from birth or caused later by environmental factors such as brain injury, mental illness, or neurological disorders. Cognitive impairment can arise from virtually any poorly controlled chronic condition of the brain or organs such as hypertension or chronic lung disease. Other causes are possible. For example, a bad reaction to medication, emotional problems, drinking too much alcohol, blood clots or tumors in the brain, or a head injury could all cause neurocognitive disorders.
One very common issue in the elderly is acute cystitis that causes delirium. Delirium will resolve one the UTI is treated. This type of illness can require monitoring for progression of illness. The medications used to treat illness such as dementia will not stop the illness, but will help slow progression of the illness.
